Awareness of Gender Identity Disorder

Gender Identity Disorder is not a mental illness or a stigma, if addressed properly, many like me can live a healthy and normal life.

Gender Identity Disorder is a condition in which a person has been assigned one gender (usually at birth) but identifies as belonging to another gender.

Gender Identity Disorder occurs during childhood or in some cases during adulthood.

Nowadays people have become conscious of healthy living whether it be diet or mental health.

So I thought it would be the right time to spread awareness about gender identity disorder.

If people suffering from gender identity disorder are not given proper medical care, the distress causes various mental disorders like depression, anxiety, substance abuse, self-harm, social isolation, eating disorders, and schizophrenia.

There is a misunderstanding that people with gender identity disorder are always gay. They can be attracted to any sex.

There is still a social stigma attached to it, wherein families don't accept their child having gender identity disorder because of social pressure.

Why would you see so many transgender in the streets asking for alms? The only reason I see is them not being accepted by their families and society.

Though times are changing, after the Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) rules were made, a website has also been made for the well-being of transgender persons.

Through this website, the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment provides transgender certificates and identity cards, education scholarships, skill training, health insurance coverage, and shelter homes to transgender persons.

Various institutions and organizations should also add transgender options in the selection of sex in various forms. The last I know, I didn't see any such option in the banking account opening form.

And also proper washroom facilities should be provided as it becomes awkward for different genders using the same washroom.

This is just the beginning of a new era, with more awareness lives of people with Gender Identity Disorder will become better.
